Some compound words (like bus rapid transit, dog whistle, or identity theft) don’t appear on the drop-down list when you type them in the search bar. For best results with compound words, place a quotation mark before the compound word in the search window.

(strŏm-bōlē)

n. pl. strom·bo·lis

A baked turnover of pizza dough rolled around a filling of cheese, meat, and often vegetables.

[Perhaps named in 1950 by its possible inventor Nazzareno Romano, owner of a pizza shop in Essington, Pennsylvania, after Stromboli (1950), a Italian neorealist film depicting life on the island of Stromboli and noted at the time for the on-set affair between director Roberto Rossellini and star Ingrid Bergman.]

Strom·bo·li

(strŏmbə-lē, strōmbō-)

An island of southern Italy in the Lipari Islands off northeast Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its volcano, 924 m (3,031 ft) high, erupted violently in 1930, 2002, and 2003.
