Tweet n. pl. gy·ros A sandwich made of sliced roasted meat, usually lamb or beef, combined with onion, tomato, seasoning, and often tzatziki sauce, and wrapped in pita bread. [From Modern Greek gýros, a turning, gyro meat (partial loan translation of Turkish döner (kebap), turning (kebab), from the turning of the meat on a spit ), from Greek gūros, circle; perhaps akin to Armenian kor, bent, curved, and kuṙn, back (of the body).] |
